If it Were My Home
Did you know that P and I were once house hunting on the Gulf of Mexico? We fell in love with this quaint little town called Palacios right there on the Gulf. Houses were beautiful and affordable and just steps from the shore. Unfortunately it didn't work out and we bought here in Round Rock instead... you all know how that turned out. :)
I'm sure that everyone has seen and been shocked by the images of the oil spill off the coast of Louisiana. I've noticed that while this crisis is getting some TV air time, it feels to me like I am hearing more about a local squabbles than I am about this disaster and I am shocked!
We have decided that we are going to do whatever we can to help. Obviously we aren't going to be central to the plans to stop the flow of oil, but we can at the very least assist with the clean up efforts. Austin based craft collective, CraftHope.com, are leading the way with their call for members to use their skills to create cloths that will be sent to aid workers to assist with the clean up of the poor animals that lie in the direct path of this oil slick. You don't need to be crafty to participate, any old towels, sheets, or blankets, cut into 10x10 pieces will be accepted.
As of this afternoon 125 people have signed up to assist, and I am one of them. I don't think it's cost effective for us to knit/crochet cloths as these will be used about 3-4 times before needing to be thrown out (unless you have a huge stash of unused wool/cotton yarn). We have a huge pile of old towels that have seen better days. I've been meaning to chop them into household rags, but wouldn't this be a far more heroic way for them to end their usefulness on this earth? Saving the lives of some of the smallest victims of this disaster!
This weekend, I am putting aside my plans to finish that yo-yo top and instead, I am going to make cloths out of our old towels. LOADS and LOADS of cloths. Won't you join me?
Click here for details on how you can participate.
How big is the oil spill? Take a look at the following pictures:
If the oil spill was in Austin, Texas this is what it would look like.
If it was in London, England.
If it was in The Netherlands... perhaps the most shocking of all!

How are the animals affected? See for yourself. *Not for sensitive readers*

It really is disgusting, isn't it? Especially the lack of coverage on the effect its having. We keep hearing about how much trouble BP is in, but that's about it. How did the cloth cutting go? Wish I could join you. The only drive over here is for hairdressers to send hair over there. I decided the best way for me to help was to sign the petition against offshore drilling and to support some of the charities that make protecting ocean life their normal day-jobs. I know BP is paying for the clean-up, but at least this might help towards the long-term damage control. Feel so helpless really, I think we all do.
