Earth Day... er... Week.

I was meaning to post this on Earth Day, but just didn't get around to it, (this week was crazy!)

So, you know I mentioned we have started recycling right? Well it's been two weeks know and you know what?
We now produce less than half the regular trash that we did before. In a normal week we were responsible for 3 trash bags for garbage collection. Since the recycling program we cut that WAYYY down and now that we have started our own compost heap in the garden it's even less. Today Peter put out one trash bag... that's it. (We have twice weekly collections... it's Texas... trash can't sit outside for too long in the sun). I believe that the average American family of four put out 6-8 bags per week, so even if you double our output to make up two extra family members, we are still well below the national average. Sooo proud!!

I had really hoped to post this video on Earth day as it's something we've been thinking about a lot here at Casa Null. The Story of Stuff. REALLY makes you think about the things we buy and the things we get rid of. It's kinda long, (20 minutes), but I promise you will find it an eye opener so please do take the time to watch it.

In other garden news... After the huge success of our first grass patch we spent many more afternoons this week clearing the patch of "lawn" <-- read "weeds" that ran contiguous to the new spiffy grass. We cleared it, we loosened soil by hand with a small spade, we raked through and removed debris from the house rebuild and lovingly planted more seeds on Wednesday evening. We've been tending the sand patch since then with great care. But then tonight... Argh! *waves fist at the sky*... tonight we had a terrible storm the likes of which I've not seen in a long while. The sky opened up and dumped on our little garden, washing all of our carefully tended seeds out under the fence and into the waterway behind our fence. *sniff!* All that hard work just washed away!

I have more pictures to load, but I will do those tomorrow.

Night y'all
