Veggie Garden: In the Beginning

And so we expanded our "garden" for 2011....  Last year we just loved loved loved having Cilantro, Basil and Chilis fresh from our garden whenever we wanted them.  I was determined to do it again this year.

This time we're adding Butternut and Potatoes to the list... we're also giving tomatoes another try... And if I get my way, we'll be potting up some onions in the next week or so as well... but we'll see about that...

In true Ros style I didn't follow instructions... "screw convention" right?  I just tossed the seeds in here and we're hoping for the best.  :)  I can't even remember which is which! haha

Only planted ip top, but this is a hanging basket as well, so I will transplant a few to the bottom depending on how many sprouts I get.

We're also giving composting a real go... I wish I could say it was purely out of an altruistic desire for a greener world blablabla... no, well... yes of course... but ALSO because... Have you SEEN the price of fertilizer lately? Yowza!  Definitely the price makes it worthwhile at least giving this a try.  Following instructions from You Grow Girl I pulled this together using some old trash cans (cleaned out very well of course) There's a double layer on the bottom, the inner can has holes in the bottom for the "tea" to drip through.  I plan to use the tea as an added fertilizer when I have some green above soil level.

I tell ya, it's a real bugger trying to keep this thing damp/moist inside in this Texas weather.  Man does it ever dry out quickly!!
